This is the most haunted by every travelers were traveled to Ijen Crater, "Rare Blue fame Phenomenon". This blue fame phenomenon is only found in two country in all over the world, and one of them is in Ijen Crater. This blue fame can be seen before sunrise reach this place.
Some source told actually the blue fame is not a real fire, but its only seems like a fire. The flames form by hot gaseous sulfur violently oxidizing on contact with air - this creates a bright blue flame plus clouds of sulfur dioxide gas (which is choking and burns the eyes).
As the sunrise hit the place, blue fame will disappear. Blue fire flames only can be seen around 2-5 am.

To getting up, you can reach the crater or mountain from two directions, from the north or the south. From the north, it can be achieved through Situbondo towards Sempol (Bondowoso) and continue to Paltuding.
The distance between Situbondo and Paltuding is about 93 km and can be reached about 2.5 hours. While from the south, it can be reach from Banyuwangi towards Licin village within 15 Km.
From Licin straight forward to Paltuding within 18 Km and continue using Jeep or other 4x4 SUV car about 6 km before to Paltuding.
The distance between Situbondo and Paltuding is about 93 km and can be reached about 2.5 hours. While from the south, it can be reach from Banyuwangi towards Licin village within 15 Km.
From Licin straight forward to Paltuding within 18 Km and continue using Jeep or other 4x4 SUV car about 6 km before to Paltuding.
Ijen Crater travel tips
1. Best time to visit
The best time to visit Mount Ijen is in the dry season from July to September. In the rainy season is very dangerous to climb because the road was slippery.2. Must bring items
Don't forget to bring this things such as Jacket, Flash light, mask (for sulphur smoke), proper sealed safety glasses and a gas mask with an acid gas cartridge, water, camera, as a main items on your travel bag.
3. Be aware for acidity
Lake Ijen has zero degrees of acidity, very strong acidity can dissolve the clothing and jewelry so it's very recommended to not bring any silver jewelries because sulphur will destroy the color caused of chemical reaction that will turn black.
